I find myself inspired by our travels through the Dakotas the past couple of weeks.
One of the first stops we had outside of our home state of Colorado was Mt. Rushmore, where a likeness of Theodore Roosevelt sits third in a row amongst the likes of Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln.
August company to be sure.
On the second half of our journey, we spent a night and most of the next day in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, where the buffalo certainly roam. My curiosity got the better of me about our 26th president, and I learned a few things.
He was the youngest president at 42, until JFK was inaugurated at 41 in 1961.
He refused to shoot a bear cub on a hunt in 1902, inspiring a toy maker to name one of the most popular toys in history after him.
We are referring of course to the teddy bear, just in case you were wondering. He was a tireless individual that championed the rights of fair commerce as well as the preservation of the most beautiful sections of our amazing country.
It came as no surprise to me that he created the United States Forest Service as well as establishing 5 National Parks during his two terms as President.
Let me lead you on an allegorical journey inspired by the legacy of Teddy Roosevelt, relative to the state of healthcare in the United States today.
The Conservation of Care
Picture this: You’re standing at the edge of a vast, primeval forest. The trees tower above you, their canopies stretching as far as the eye can see.
Now, imagine that forest is your health – wild, complex, and utterly vital.
Just as Teddy fought tooth and nail to preserve America’s natural wonders, it’s high time we rally to protect the landscape of our nation’s wellbeing.
Roosevelt understood that our national forests weren’t just pretty postcards; they were the lifeblood of our country.
Similarly, our healthcare system isn’t just a collection of hospitals and insurance forms – it’s the very foundation of our national vitality.
But much like the logging barons of old, today’s healthcare giants are clear-cutting through our medical resources, leaving us with stumps where mighty oaks of affordable care once stood.
Trust-Busting in the Medical Jungle
Now, let’s talk about those medical mammoths stomping through the underbrush of your bank account.
Roosevelt didn’t just tip his hat to the industrial titans of his day – he rolled up his sleeves and got to work dismantling their monopolies.
It’s time we channel that same trust-busting energy into our healthcare system.
Imagine Roosevelt, with his trademark grin and big stick, striding into the boardrooms of pharmaceutical companies and hospital chains.
“Bully!” he might exclaim, eyeing their profit margins with the same determination he once reserved for charging up San Juan Hill. “This simply won’t do!”
Just as Teddy sought to ensure fair competition in commerce, we must push for transparency and reasonableness in medical pricing.
It’s not about destroying the system, but about pruning it back to health – ensuring that it serves both the patients who need care and the dedicated professionals who provide it.
A Square Deal for Your Health
Roosevelt championed what he called the “Square Deal” – a fair shake for every American, regardless of their station in life. In the realm of healthcare, this translates to:
Accessible care: No more medical treatment hidden behind a thicket of bureaucracy and inflated costs.
Fair compensation: Ensuring our doctors, nurses, and medical staff are paid what they’re worth, without bankrupting patients.
Transparency: Shining a light on the shadowy corners of medical billing, much like Roosevelt’s “muckrakers” exposed corporate corruption.
Speak Softly and Carry a Big Reflex Hammer
You might be thinking, “This all sounds great, but what can I do?”
Well, my friend, remember that Roosevelt wasn’t born a legend – he became one through tireless effort and an unwavering belief in what was right.
Start small.
Educate yourself: Understand your medical bills, question costs, and don’t be afraid to negotiate.
Advocate: Reach out to your representatives. Make your voice heard in the halls of power.
Support reform: Back initiatives that promote fair pricing and increased transparency in healthcare.
Remember, Roosevelt once said, “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”
Your Practice’s “Bully Pulpit”
The path to healthcare reform may seem as daunting as scaling the heights of Yosemite, but with determination and collective effort, we can create a system that would make old Teddy himself tip his hat in approval.
So, the next time you find yourself staring down the barrel of a medical bill that looks more like the GDP of a small nation, channel your inner Roosevelt.
Stand tall, speak boldly, and remember – in the great wilderness of healthcare reform, you’re not just a visitor.
You’re the conservationist, the trust-buster, the champion of a new Square Deal. And that, my friend, is a role worthy of the Bull Moose himself.
Let me leave you with a little food for thought: have you ever wanted to discuss an even more proactive approach to the business element of your practice?
Yes? So, have you ever thought about how having a non-equity financial partner guiding your practice can increase your wealth, reduce your taxes, and provide the peace of mind that will allow you to put 110% of yourself into your patient care goals?
We would like to talk to you about it.
We are accepting two new business advisory clients in the month of October.
Since that begins tomorrow, we’ll certainly be happy to talk today as well.
