Just like that, the year is almost halfway over.
But hey, when the weather’s warm and the kids are playing outside after dinner it sure feels more like a beginning, doesn’t it?
As much as the focus of the information we bring you is meant to be helpful to keep more of your own money, both in tax savings and other cash and income stimulating strategies, we have to remember the deepest reason why we do these things.
To have the best life possible. This goes double if you have young people and/or a spouse counting on you.
I’m going to keep this short and light-hearted this week because I feel just like the young Firkids do, the stress of school behind them, and the fall semester a million miles away.
Want to know why?
Because by the time you’re reading this I will have just finished the 2023 Missoula Marathon.
The full 26.2 race, not the half.
I don’t know if it’s possible to make someone understand how big a deal this is by merely writing about it, but I’m going to take a stab at it, and then hopefully wrap up with some good helpful information at the end.
The Marathon of Missoula, Montana
First let’s talk about the marathon in general. This is a distance that tests the endurance of the human animal, because it is by no means a normal distance to run.
After 18 to 20 miles or so the body goes into carbohydrate debt, the small capillaries of the extremities are put under unusual stress, tissue breaks down, the sodium and potassium stores of the body are depleted unless replenished.
All kinds of neat things like that. One does not run 26 miles in training simply because it takes time to recover from it.
So, just doing it, finishing it, and getting to say you did is kind of a deal.
Marathon Handbook’s website states that about 1.2 million people run a marathon every year.
That is a global statistic. Like, the entire planet.
If you divide 8 billion people into that you get an impossibly small fraction of 1%, in fact the number is 0.0015%.
If you don’t know, the marathon killed the first person that ran it. This was a poor unfortunate Greek messenger named Pheidippides, who ran the 25 miles from Marathon to Athens to bring the news that Greece fell in battle to the Trojans.
Then, bam, dead. Right at the feet of the ruling council.
Of course, he didn’t have aid stations, carb gels, sodium tablets, sideline spectators yelling encouragement.
Excellent segue to the next thing to talk about. The fact of the race being in Missoula.
This is cool for me no matter what anyway, because my oldest daughter, and only granddaughter, are Missoula residents.
Your humble reporter never worries about hotel lodging. But wait, there’s more.
I have run in 10 marathons by the time you read this, including Missoula 3 times, and it remains my favorite place to race.
Speaking of yelling spectators. The town LOVES its race, and the citizens are out in force with unaffected enthusiasm.
Plus, it’s just a beautiful place to run, into the sun slowly rising over Sentinel Mountain in the early morning.
If you ever had a notion to enter this race, I’m telling you, obey your instinct. Go for it.
And do it early, like the previous fall or winter. It fills every year due to its well-earned popularity.
So, gentle reader, this is why I love this time of year, almost exactly opposite in calendar polarity from Christmas.
It’s a great week to be alive!
The Final Sunday, and Week, of June
Summer begins, and along with it the 3rd Quarter. With the 1st being on a Saturday I suppose there are quite a few people they may be doing nothing business-related at all until after the 4th in our fine Land of Liberty and Freedom.
Come July 5th, opportunity abounds. I can think of very few times equally advantageous for measuring the performance of a company.
The exact mid-point of the year is the simplest math problem in the world.
Multiply by 2, and there you have it. Your estimated income and expenses for the year.
Prime time to take a good look at fixed expenses, payroll, and if it figures into your plans even asset acquisition.
