The Fourth Quarter is Beautiful

I’d like to think that when I sit down to share an idea or two, that I’m inspired at least in small part by the naturally occurring events and happenstances in my life.

It’s no accident that my work desk is set up with a view outside my window.

Regardless of the best efforts of my fellow hominids to suck the life out of the planet in a million small ways, it’s still a beautiful place to live.

Planet Earth, I mean.

Especially when the sky is view and the temperature is ideal, like today.

Life is good.

I write quite a bit about the milestones and landmarks that dot the calendar in relation to financial metrics, and if you’ve been following along then you know the Fourth Quarter is upon us with the passing of summer and the onset of fall.

The current quarter ends along with the end of this month, and October 1st kicks off the new quarter.

Same as every other year.

An exciting time.

The fiscal homestretch, if you will.

Three quarters of performance against which to measure, to create budgets, forecasts and projections.

Then I got to thinking, and you know what?

The Fourth Quarter is beautiful.

In those parts of our country that have a fall color change, such as where I live now in Colorado as well as other places such as Pennsylvania and Minnesota that I’ve been lucky enough to call home, the quarter starts out on a very high note.

If you’re the kind of person who appreciates the natural beauty of such things.

And really, who isn’t?

Thinking about the work/life balance necessary to have the success required to enjoy the freedom that success offers, this opened up into a new sudden understanding for me.

Like one of those fast-motion Disney animations of a flower blooming.

In the process of working hard and playing hard, getting all the things done to have the money, and doing all the things to make sure our families know we love them and want to spend time with them, maybe we miss one really simple reality, inherent yet hidden from our understanding.

The Fourth Quarter is beautiful.

We enter it with a world full of color unparalleled during the rest of year, and depart it shortly after the celebration of Yule and the coming of Christ.

This is not only a tremendously important time of year for our businesses, but for our souls as well.

We’re in the Stretch

Well…as of this writing we’re still a couple of weeks away. We’ve had a few cool nights so far, and a few of the bushes and trees are showing some signs of change.

This past week was hard, with two important compliance deadlines having passed as of the 15th: the 3rd Quarter Estimated tax, and the extension deadline for business returns.

(You still have until October 15th if you filed an extension for your 1040).

In horse racing terms, we’re rounding the back turn, and before you know it…

…we’re in the stretch.

Whatever else you have going on to wrap up September, and ensure the 4th Quarter makes all your wildest dreams come true, remember this:

A beautiful time of year is upon us.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to become aware of this very simple, and elegant fact.

I hope to make even a few people happy by sharing this today. I would be grateful for that, too.
