Summer is well underway, and I’m hopeful that if you’re reading this right now it’s because you’re taking a few well-earned moments of rest between tasks.
Do you remember the movie version of “The Shining” with Jack Nicholson?
His character had typed about a full ream of paper obsessively with the phrase, “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.”
That’s just a free association thought that bobbed to the surface when I thought of this topic.
But there is a larger point.
You work hard. Very hard.
You even sacrifice to make your business dreams work, sometimes at the expense of your relationships.
It’s happened to you at least once. Don’t deny it.
I work very hard on this myself, and I like to think I’m constantly improving, but I am guilty as charged.
Hello, my name is Eric, and I am a workaholic.
Are you?
The Question of Balance
There is a force in the universe that craves duality.
Think about that, and a multitude of examples becomes clear.
Night/day. Earth/sky. Husband/wife. Mother/father. Hot/cold. Left brain/right brain.
You get the idea.
Add to that the dichotomy of work vs. play. No hesitation, no “yeah, buts,” just picture it.
Close your eyes, picture it, and feel the feelings you had the last time it came up.
Now, I have some advice for you:
Whether we’re talking work or play, do that, with a laser-like focus. Even the fun stuff.
Especially the fun stuff!
I have learned through personal experience that if all you can think about is work, even as a stay-at-home emerging and successful entrepreneur, when you’re supposed to be paying attention to the fun you’re having with your family, somebody suffers.
More often than not that someone is yourself.
Have you ever had a spouse or significant honey tell you that you work too much?
You may not agree with them, and they may not even be right, but here’s the thing:
Your person is expressing a feeling the best way they know how, and like cows laying down before a storm it’s prudent to pay attention to the signs.
The unspoken words under the words, between the lines.
If you’re in a conversation with someone, be all the way there.
I’m sharing this because I am a latter-day convert. I was guilty of wandering focus for much of my earlier adult life, and I’ve had the people that I’m lucky enough to have love me point it out.
We can all do better, and it’s a skill worth working on your whole life.
Trust me.
Your Eyes on the Prize
The main thing is really simple, and also very easy to forget:
In the process of making a living, don’t forget to have a life.
Over time, I have developed the way I get to know a potential new client during a discovery call.
One of the questions I like to ask when the time is right is, “Is there anything you would do differently, if you could, about your work/life balance?”
I get a lot of interesting answers to that one.
Enough so that I’m going to challenge you, right now, to ask yourself that same question.
How is YOUR work/life balance?
I would like to think that we’re doing more than just empowering businesses to thrive.
We are endeavoring to empower business owners to live their best lives.
To see the sights, enjoy the quality time with loved ones, and take that extra moment to smell the flowers.
When we say, “Accounting that empowers property owners,” we don’t just mean making them wealthy beyond their dreams and reducing their taxes.
Oh yeah, that’s one of the main branches of the tree, but without the upper branches of a fulfilling life the tree is less than full and lush.
I would like to invite you to explore what this means if this resonates with you today.
Come book a free no-obligation hour to discuss your business aspirations as well as your work/life balance goals with me, today.
We are only accepting two new clients in August. Why not find out if being the first one is right for you?
Reach out now through the social media you may be reading this on, or just click here and book a Work With Me conversation now.
We empower property investors with an accounting-on-steroids approach.
And without any hesitation we take your ability to lead the best life possible outside of your business as seriously as you do.
Let’s talk. Soon!
